Spotify is asking some Premium Family members to prove they live with the person who pays for the plan, and the new check is a QR code that has to be scanned in person. Members who don't scan it within seven days lose their spot on the plan and are blocked from joining another Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
Reports of the prompt surfaced on Reddit earlier this week, and on Spotify's third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, October 22, 2026, co-CEO Alex Norström confirmed the change while calling it "a routine improvement" rather than a crackdown. Here is how the QR code check works, who gets it, what happens if you miss it and what it means for the price you pay.
What is Spotify's Family plan QR code check?
Premium Family lets up to six people share one subscription, each with their own account. Spotify's own plan page describes it as being for a "family under one roof", and the terms require everyone on the plan to live at the same address as the plan manager, the person who pays.
Spotify has long checked this by asking members for their home address when they join, when the manager moves, or when it can't confirm the address. The new step goes further. According to Spotify's support page, it "may ask some Premium Family members to verify they live with the plan manager by scanning a QR code." The code appears on the plan manager's phone and the member scans it with their own phone, which means both people have to be in the same place.
The code is not a static image. Spotify's troubleshooting notes say the code "changes every few seconds", so a screenshot sent over a messaging app won't work. The check can only be done in the Spotify mobile app, and Spotify asks both people to install the latest version first.
How to complete the Spotify QR code verification
If you are the plan manager: open the Spotify app, tap your profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage. That is where the QR code appears. If you are the member who got the prompt: open the notification in the Spotify app on your phone and scan the manager's code with your phone camera while you are together.
Spotify's tips if the scan fails: make sure both phones have the latest app version, check that the time and date are set correctly on both devices, close and reopen the app, and make sure you are scanning the code in person rather than from a photo or screenshot.
What happens if you miss the seven-day window
Members have seven days from the notification to complete the scan. If they miss the window or can't complete it, Spotify says they "can't join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months" and are pointed to buy a plan of their own. 9to5Google and Android Authority report that members who miss the window are moved to Spotify's free, ad-supported tier, which matches what Spotify's support page says happens when an address check fails.
Spotify's rules for the older address check show one small exception: a member who fails can rejoin the same Family or Duo plan, just not a different one, for 12 months. For people who genuinely live with the plan manager, the fix is simply to scan the code together when you are both home.
In short: the plan manager opens the code under Your Premium, then Manage. The member scans it in person within seven days. Miss it and you drop off the plan and can't join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
What Spotify said on its Q3 earnings call
An investor asked about the change on the October 22 call. "This is not as much a crackdown as it is actually a routine improvement of our verification methods for our Family Plan," Norström said, according to TechCrunch and The Verge. He said the Family plan has been around for "close to 12, 13 years" and "makes up a pretty significant proportion of our subscriber base."
He also made clear the checks are not a one-off. "There are certainly ways, over time, to find holes around it. As that happens, we figure out how to improve it over time," he said. "This is not something that has an end date."

The numbers from the same day show why the plan matters. Spotify said it ended the third quarter with 306 million paying Premium subscribers, up 9% from a year earlier, after adding 6 million in the quarter. Monthly active users rose 11% to 788 million and revenue grew 16% to about 5.0 billion euros (14% at constant currency). Spotify does not break out how many subscribers are on Family plans.
How much Spotify Premium costs in the US
The money at stake for a moved member is the gap between a shared seat and a plan of their own. On Spotify's US plans page (checked October 23, 2026, 13:26 UTC), Premium Individual costs $12.99 a month, Premium Duo $18.99 a month for two accounts at the same address, Premium Family $21.99 a month for up to six accounts, and Premium Student $6.99 a month for eligible students.
Split six ways, Family works out to about $3.67 per person a month, compared with $12.99 for an individual plan. That gap is exactly why some people have shared Family plans with friends or relatives who live elsewhere, and why Spotify wants to close it. Prices differ by country, so check Spotify's premium page for your market.
Why Spotify is doing this now
Streaming services have been tightening account sharing for a few years, most visibly Netflix with its paid-sharing rules. For Spotify, every Family member who moves to a plan of their own can turn a few dollars of monthly revenue into $12.99 or more in the US. TechCrunch describes the move as aimed at boosting subscriptions to Spotify's profitable Premium plans.
Some users have posted workarounds, such as showing the code over a video call, and Android Authority reports some have managed to get past the check that way. Using a Family plan with people outside your home still breaks Spotify's terms, and Norström's comments suggest the company will keep adjusting its checks as gaps appear.
What you should do
If everyone on your plan lives together, you don't need to do anything until a prompt appears, then scan the code at home within the week. Keeping the Spotify app updated on every phone in the house avoids the most common scan failures.
If someone on your plan lives elsewhere, such as a student away at university or a relative in another city, they may get the prompt and have seven days to be in the same place as the plan manager. If that isn't possible, the realistic options are Premium Student if they qualify, Premium Duo with someone they live with, or Premium Individual. Spotify hasn't said how many members will be asked to verify or whether the check will expand beyond Family plans.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Spotify asking me to scan a QR code?
Spotify is checking that Premium Family members live with the plan manager. Some members get a prompt to scan a QR code shown on the plan manager's phone, in person, to confirm they share the same home.
How do I find the Spotify Family QR code?
The plan manager opens the Spotify mobile app, taps their profile picture, then Your Premium, then Manage. The member then scans that code with their own phone while both are in the same place.
How long do I have to scan the Spotify QR code?
Spotify gives plan members seven days from the notification to complete the QR code scan.
What happens if I don't verify my Spotify Family plan?
You lose access to the Family plan and, according to reports, move to Spotify's free tier. You also can't join a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months, though you can buy your own plan.
Can I screenshot the Spotify QR code?
No. Spotify says the code changes every few seconds, so it has to be scanned in person in the mobile app. A screenshot won't work.
Did Spotify confirm the Family plan crackdown?
Yes. Co-CEO Alex Norström confirmed the new verification on the Q3 2026 earnings call on October 22, but called it a routine improvement of Spotify's verification methods rather than a crackdown.
How much is Spotify Premium Family in the US?
Spotify's US plans page lists Premium Family at $21.99 a month for up to six accounts, Duo at $18.99, Individual at $12.99 and Student at $6.99 (checked October 23, 2026).
Does the QR code check affect Spotify Duo?
Spotify's support page describes the QR code scan for Premium Family members. Duo also requires both people to live at the same address, and a member who fails verification can't join another Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
