AMD's newest upscaler is spreading well beyond its newest graphics cards. On Tuesday, October 20, AMD said FSR 4.1, its machine-learning upscaling technology, now works on Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards and several Ryzen laptop chips, reaches the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld in a preview update on October 23, and is coming soon to the Xbox Series X and Series S.

For console players the headline is Xbox. Microsoft's chief technology officer for Xbox, Scott Van Vliet, appeared in AMD's announcement video to confirm the news, and AMD added that Project Helix, the next Xbox, will use a future version it calls FSR Diamond. Here is what FSR 4.1 does, which devices get it and when, and what it means if you own an Xbox.

What is FSR 4.1?

FSR stands for FidelityFX Super Resolution. Like Nvidia's DLSS, it lets a game draw each frame at a lower resolution, which is faster, and then rebuilds a sharper, higher-resolution image for your screen. Older versions such as FSR 3.1 did that without machine learning. FSR 4 and 4.1 use a trained machine-learning model instead, which AMD says gives clearly better fine detail, more stable images in motion and less ghosting.

The catch has always been hardware. FSR 4 launched in 2025 only on Radeon RX 9000 cards. AMD brought the improved FSR 4.1 to those cards in March 2026, according to The Verge, and to RX 7000 cards over the summer. Running a model like this on older chips takes extra work, and AMD says it has now tuned and slimmed the model down so it runs on far more devices.

FSR 4.1 is part of a bundle AMD calls FSR Redstone, which also includes machine-learning frame generation and a ray-tracing clean-up feature called Ray Regeneration. Today's expansion covers the upscaler. Notebookcheck notes that the other Redstone features have their own hardware requirements, so check them separately.

FSR 4.1 on Xbox Series X and S: when is it coming?

There is no date yet. AMD lists Xbox Series X and Series S consoles as "coming soon". Xbox's Jason Ronald wrote on X on October 20 that FSR 4.1 will be available to developers on Xbox Series X and S "very soon", and that Microsoft worked with AMD to tune the models for both consoles and the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds.

That wording matters. On a console, FSR is something game developers build into their games, not a switch you flip in the settings. Notebookcheck points out that earlier FSR versions are already available to Xbox developers through Microsoft's game development kit. So once FSR 4.1 reaches that kit, expect it to show up game by game, in new releases and in patches for existing ones, rather than in every game at once.

The Series S, the cheaper and less powerful of the two consoles, is where The Verge and Pure Xbox both expect the biggest impact. A better upscaler can make a lower-resolution image look sharper, or let developers drop the resolution to hold a smoother frame rate. Neither AMD nor Microsoft has shared Xbox image-quality or performance figures yet, so wait for real tests before expecting a dramatic change.

Van Vliet said AMD has been an Xbox partner for more than two decades and that "there's even more ahead with Project Helix, leveraging FSR Diamond to power what comes next." AMD has not explained what FSR Diamond is or how it differs from FSR 4.1.

How Xbox compares with PlayStation's AI upscaling

Sony got there first. FSR 4.1 grew partly out of Project Amethyst, a joint AMD and Sony machine-learning graphics effort. AMD says that work is behind FSR 4.1 on Radeon cards, Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on the base PS5, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro. The Verge notes FSR 4.1's Xbox news comes just weeks after QSSR arrived on the standard PS5.

PlayStation's upscalers also work game by game. QSSR launched on the base PS5 in just two games, Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, with more expected as developers add it. Until FSR 4.1 games ship on Xbox and testers compare them, there is no fair way to say which console will look better.

ROG Xbox Ally X: preview update on October 23

Handheld owners get it first. ASUS says FSR 4.1 arrives on the ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X20 as a preview GPU driver on October 23. To try it, open Armoury Crate SE, go to Update Center, then Preview Updates, and install the latest GPU driver. ASUS warns preview updates can still have bugs. If you would rather wait, the driver will appear under Official Updates once it leaves preview.

After updating, you can turn on FSR in the graphics settings of games that support it. ASUS also says a new FSR tile in the Command Center can switch on FSR 4.1 in older games that support FSR 3.1 or newer, which it says covers more than 400 games. Add the tile by opening Command Center and pressing Y to customize the layout. ASUS advises not to combine it with RSR, AMD's system-wide upscaler meant for games without FSR.

Handhelds run a different version of FSR 4.1. ASUS says the model on the Ally X is "less than half the size" of the original INT8 model, built for the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip's tighter power budget. AMD lists the Ryzen Z2 A, the chip in the cheaper white ROG Xbox Ally, as supported too, but ASUS's October 20 post only names the Ally X and Ally X20 for the October 23 preview. ASUS has not said when the base model gets it, and AMD tells handheld owners to check with their device maker for drivers.

What about the Steam Deck? It is not on AMD's list, and Valve has not confirmed support. The Verge and Notebookcheck both note that the Ryzen Z2 A shares the Deck's older Zen 2 processor cores and RDNA 2 graphics design, which is encouraging, but nothing is official.

Radeon RX 6000 and Ryzen laptops: available now

PC players do not have to wait. AMD's Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver, released October 20, adds FSR 4.1 support for Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards, Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 series processors, and Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400 series processors, according to AMD's release notes.

That is a big deal for people still using cards from 2020 and 2021, such as the RX 6600, RX 6700 XT and RX 6800 XT. Wccftech reports that AMD demonstrated FSR 4.1 on an RX 6800 XT and says it optimized the model for the whole lineup, from the RX 6900 series down to RX 6400-class cards. Notebookcheck says RX 6000 support arrived months ahead of AMD's earlier target of early 2027.

For laptops and mini PCs, Notebookcheck notes the list names Ryzen AI 9 chips but not Ryzen AI 7 or Ryzen AI 5, so cheaper Ryzen AI laptops may miss out for now. AMD gives the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 and TUF A14 as examples of Ryzen AI Max machines that can now use it. Laptop owners should prefer their manufacturer's driver where AMD recommends it.

The same driver adds support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and fixes stuttering in that game on RX 6000 and newer cards.

What else AMD announced

AMD also said FSR 4 is getting Vulkan support, which matters for Linux gaming and for games built on the Vulkan graphics API, though there is no date and it is not listed in the 26.10.1 release notes. It is improving frame pacing for FSR Frame Generation so generated frames feel smoother, bringing Ray Regeneration to more games, and Wccftech reports AMD says FSR Redstone now works in more than 400 games on RX 9000 cards.

Should you care?

If you have an RX 6000 card or a Ryzen AI Max or Ryzen AI 9 laptop, update to Adrenalin 26.10.1 now and try FSR 4.1 in a supported game. If you own an ROG Xbox Ally X, the preview arrives on October 23, or you can wait for the stable release. If you own an Xbox Series X or S, there is nothing to install. Watch for games that add FSR 4.1 in updates over the coming months, and treat any big promises as unproven until independent tests arrive.
