Anbernic's RG DDS is the closest thing yet to a modern Nintendo 3DS XL that Nintendo didn't make. The dual-screen Android handheld went up for pre-order on October 16, and it costs a lot more than the budget handhelds Anbernic is known for: $299.99 for the base model and $364.99 for the higher-spec version, with $15 off both during the pre-order period.
Here is what the RG DDS costs, when it ships, what is inside, what Anbernic has shown it running, and how it stacks up against its most obvious rival, the Retroid Pocket Duo.
Anbernic RG DDS price and pre-order deal
Anbernic sells the RG DDS in two memory configurations on its official store. The 8GB RAM and 128GB storage model is $299.99, or $284.99 during pre-orders. The 12GB and 256GB model is $364.99, or $349.99 during pre-orders. Those prices were live on anbernic.com when we checked at 13:30 UTC on October 18, 2026 (19:00 IST), and they are the same whether you choose the China or the US shipping option.
Pre-orders opened on October 16 at 18:00 Beijing time (10:00 UTC, 6am ET, 3:30pm IST). The Verge reported the same prices from Anbernic's AliExpress listings a day earlier. Anbernic does not bundle a microSD card or any games, and Notebookcheck notes that it has dropped the SD card bundles it offered with earlier devices. The store does list an optional protective bag that fits both the RG DDS and RG DS Plus for $9.99.
There is no official India price. Anbernic sells through its own global store and AliExpress, and it has not announced Indian retail pricing or a local launch in the sources we checked.
When does the RG DDS ship?
Not before December. Anbernic's store page says the RG DDS "ships gradually starting December 10, 2026", and the pre-sale notice Anbernic published says all pre-orders should ship no later than January 31, 2027. Retro Dodo points out that overseas delivery usually takes another one to two weeks, so a unit ordered now may not arrive in time for Christmas unless yours is in the first batch.
Anbernic describes shipping as gradual, so orders placed now could land anywhere in that window. If you need it under the tree, this is a gamble.

RG DDS specs: screens, chip and battery
The RG DDS is a clamshell, like a 3DS XL. The top screen is a 4.7-inch IPS panel at 1200 x 720 with a 5:3 shape, and the bottom one is a 4-inch IPS touchscreen at 960 x 720 with a 4:3 shape. Both are rated at 300 pixels per inch and 500 nits of brightness. Anbernic says each display has exactly three times the width and height in pixels of the matching original 3DS screen, so 3DS games scale up cleanly without black bars or stretching.
Inside is Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, a 4nm chip made for handheld gaming consoles, with an Adreno A22 graphics processor. It runs Android 16, with 8GB or 12GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage and a microSD slot for cards up to 2TB. A 6,000mAh battery charges at up to 27W over USB-C, and there is a fan and heat pipe for cooling.
The rest of the list: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, front-facing stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a linear vibration motor, a six-axis gyroscope, two capacitive analog sticks, and a USB-C port that can output 1080p video to a TV. A magnetic sensor puts it to sleep when you close the lid. It measures 16.6 x 9.3 x 2.6cm and weighs 434g, noticeably heavier than Retroid's rival.
In the box you get the console, a USB charging cable, a user manual, a screen protector and a stylus that slides out of the body, a nod to the 3DS that the cheaper Retroid only offers as an add-on.
What is the AI button?
One new addition is a dedicated AI button. Anbernic's product page lists one-click game guide lookup, real-time translation, chat-style questions, text-to-image generation and image processing as its AI features. Engadget reports that Anbernic says the button will offer game guides, translation during play and "more fun AI features". Anbernic's product page doesn't say which AI service powers these features or whether any of them need an internet connection or a subscription, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to buy.

What games can the RG DDS run?
Nintendo 3DS emulation is the headline. In its official First Look video, which Anbernic labels as showing an early engineering prototype, the company ran 3DS games through the Azahar Plus emulator: Pokemon Ultra Sun, Resident Evil: Revelations and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate at three times the original resolution, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Kirby: Triple Deluxe at five times.
The same video, as listed by Retro Handhelds and Android Authority, also showed Wii U emulation through Cemu (with both screens blurred out, so it is hard to judge), PlayStation 3, original Xbox and PlayStation 2 games, PC games through GameNative, and Android's own Zenless Zone Zero. Retro Handhelds says the on-screen performance readout suggested the games were holding 60 frames per second, but these are Anbernic's own demos on pre-release hardware, not independent tests. Wait for reviews before you count on PS3 or Wii U performance.
Anbernic ships the RG DDS with no games installed. You will need your own legally obtained games, and Nintendo has a long record of going after emulator projects.
RG DDS vs Retroid Pocket Duo
The obvious comparison is Retroid's Pocket Duo, the other big dual-screen Android handheld of 2026. Retroid lists it at $269 for its single 8GB and 128GB model, and Notebookcheck reports a $249 discounted price until October 31. That makes the Retroid $30 cheaper than the base RG DDS before discounts.
The Pocket Duo has the better screens on paper: 120Hz AMOLED panels, a 5.5-inch 1080p top screen and a 4.5-inch 1280 x 960 bottom screen, according to Play It Again's spec comparison. The RG DDS uses 60Hz IPS panels instead, but its resolutions are exact multiples of the 3DS, which is what 3DS fans care about most. The Anbernic also has the newer Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip, a 12GB option, a built-in stylus and a clamshell lid that protects the screens. The Retroid is lighter, at about 350g against 434g.
Put simply: if you want the best screens for the money, the Retroid wins. If you want something that looks and feels like a 3DS XL with more power and cleaner 3DS scaling, the RG DDS is the one to watch.
Should you pre-order the Anbernic RG DDS?
The case for pre-ordering is the $15 discount and an earlier spot in the shipping queue. The case against is that nobody outside Anbernic has tested it yet, it ships no earlier than December 10, and $299.99 is a lot for a company whose name was built on handhelds under $100, such as the original RG DS.
If you mainly want to replay 3DS games on two screens and like the clamshell design, the RG DDS looks like the most faithful option so far. If you can wait, independent reviews should arrive around the time the first units ship, and the full price only goes up by $15. We will update this story when they do.
