Apple Intelligence is finally coming to iPhones in China. In a press release on its China newsroom on October 31, 2026 (late October 30 in the US), Apple said the first batch of its AI features will open for testing on November 4 in the latest iOS developer beta, then reach Chinese users with iOS 27.3 in December. Apple also confirmed a partnership with Alibaba: its Qwen assistant will be built into Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence.

It is the first time Apple has put dates on a China launch that has been stuck for about two years. Here is what is included, what is missing, which iPhones get it and how Qwen fits in.

When does Apple Intelligence launch in China?

Testing starts on November 4 with the newest iOS developer beta. MacRumors notes that a November 4 date in China most likely means Tuesday, November 3 in the US because of the time difference. 9to5Mac points out that Apple only confirmed November 4 as the start of Apple Intelligence testing in China, not necessarily the exact release date of the first iOS 27.3 beta.

The public release follows with iOS 27.3 in December. Apple did not give an exact day. That matches what Bloomberg reported earlier in October, according to 9to5Mac.

What features are included

Apple says the features run on generative models that Apple built itself. The South China Morning Post counts around 18 new features in the first wave. Apple's list includes:

Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and the Phone app, plus face-to-face translation through supported AirPods. Writing Tools to rewrite, proofread and summarize text. Visual Intelligence, which identifies objects and places through the iPhone camera. Clean Up in Photos to remove distractions. Genmoji, which makes custom emoji from a text description.

There is also natural-language search in Photos, memory movies made from a description, Priority Mail at the top of the inbox, Mail summaries, Smart Reply in Mail and Messages, notification summaries on the Lock Screen, Priority Notifications, the Reduce Interruptions Focus, summaries of audio recordings in Notes, call transcript summaries and Type to Siri, which lets you type to Siri and keeps context across a conversation.

How Alibaba's Qwen works inside Siri

Qwen is Alibaba's AI assistant, and in China it takes a role similar to the one ChatGPT has played in Apple Intelligence elsewhere since 2024, as The Verge notes. Apple says Siri can hand certain requests to Qwen to tap its broader knowledge. You can also ask questions about photos and about documents, including PDFs and presentations.

Qwen also appears in Writing Tools through a Create option that writes original content from scratch, and in Visual Intelligence for text and image understanding. To use it, you sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple.

Which iPhones get Apple Intelligence in China

The first rollout is iPhone only. Apple lists the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo. Siri and the device language need to be set to English or Simplified Chinese.

Live Translation with AirPods works with AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 or later and AirPods Max 2, on the latest firmware and paired with an iPhone that has Apple Intelligence turned on. Apple says Mac, iPad and other devices in China will follow only after it receives the necessary approvals.

What's missing: no Siri AI yet

Apple says this release does not include Siri AI or the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features it announced at WWDC 2026. MacRumors adds that Image Playground will not be available in China on iOS 27.3 either. So Chinese users get the earlier set of Apple Intelligence tools, plus Qwen, rather than the newest assistant that English speakers are testing.

Why it took so long

China is Apple's second-largest market, and the South China Morning Post describes this launch as ending two years of regulatory uncertainty. According to The Verge, Apple Intelligence was approved in China in July, and Reuters reported in August that Apple had trained its own large language model specifically for China.

For iPhone owners outside China, nothing changes with this announcement. The Qwen integration is designed for users in China. The bigger question for Apple is how quickly it can bring Siri AI and its Mac and iPad features to the country once it gets further approvals, and Apple has not given a timeline for that.
