Sonos is finally opening up its new AI voice assistant. Sonos 27voice, a cloud-powered replacement for the company's basic voice commands, enters a limited US early access test this month, with sign-ups opening in the Sonos app on Thursday, November 6, 2026.

The assistant arrives alongside a Sonos app update that adds one-tap Presets, a swipe-to-skip gesture and a System Health screen on iPhone. Here is what Sonos 27voice can do, who can try it, what it can't do yet and how to join the waitlist.

When Sonos 27voice early access starts

Sonos says early access sign-ups open on November 6. The Verge reports that people on the waitlist will start getting access from November 12. Places are limited, and Sonos says acceptance is first come, first served and not guaranteed, with a delay between signing up and getting access.

Early access is only open to households in the United States and only works in US English. Sonos says the assistant will be available globally, still in US English, once early access ends, and Engadget reports the company is aiming for a full release in 2027. Sonos has not given a firmer date, saying it depends on how testing goes.

What Sonos 27voice can do

The old Sonos Voice Control needs fairly rigid commands, such as asking for a specific album by a specific artist in a named room. Sonos 27voice is built to understand looser, conversational requests. Sonos's examples include asking for the album with a sardine tin on the cover, or asking who sang at the Super Bowl and then playing their latest album in the hallway.

According to Sonos, the assistant can play music by mood or genre, start different music in different rooms in one sentence, group and ungroup speakers, move playback between rooms, add songs to the queue, set timers, check the weather for any location and control Philips Hue and Lutron smart home gear. It also handles follow-ups and corrections like "no, the acoustic version" without you repeating the wake word, and it can answer general knowledge questions for the first time.

How it works and what happens to your voice

Sonos says 27voice uses a large language model, an AI system trained on lots of text, that the company fine-tuned in-house for music and Sonos systems, together with some third-party AI models for certain open-ended requests. Unlike the current assistant, which runs on the speaker itself, 27voice processes requests in Sonos's cloud.

The wake word, "Hey Sonos", is still detected on the speaker, and Sonos says your voice isn't sent to the cloud until it hears it. The company says it doesn't save voice recordings or transcripts and deletes them once a request is done. Because it relies on the cloud, 27voice needs Wi-Fi, so it won't work on a portable speaker such as the Move 2 in Bluetooth mode.

What Sonos 27voice can't do yet

Sonos is clear that this is a music-focused assistant, not a full Alexa replacement. It doesn't do alarms (timers are supported), announcements or intercom, routines, calls or shopping. It can add to the queue but can't remove, reorder or save it as a playlist. You also can't search your local music library by voice, though Sonos playlists that contain library tracks do work.

Only one Sonos voice assistant can run per system, so you can't use the old Sonos Voice Control in one room and 27voice in another. You can switch back and forth at any time. Sonos 27voice can sit alongside Amazon Alexa on the same speaker, but not alongside Google Assistant, which has to live on a different speaker in the same home.

Which speakers and how much it costs

Sonos 27voice is free. It works on any Sonos product with a built-in microphone that runs Sonos 27, the software update Sonos began rolling out in September 2026 to its S2 platform products. Older speakers stuck on the S1 app can't get it.

How to join the Sonos 27voice waitlist

From November 6, open the Sonos app on iPhone or Android, go to Settings and look for a tile called Join Early Access for Sonos 27voice. Tap Request Early Access and follow the prompts. The tile then changes to say you're on the list, and if you are accepted it changes again to Set up Sonos 27voice.

Once approved, you add it from Settings, General Settings, Voice Assistants, then Add a Voice Assistant. Anyone who joins will see the old assistant renamed Classic Sonos Voice Control, and you can downgrade from the same menu.

Presets, swipe to skip and System Health

The same app update, version 27.3, adds Presets: saved combinations of music, rooms and volume that start with a single tap from the Home screen, such as one album at full volume in the garage. It also lets you swipe on the Now Playing screen or mini player to skip tracks, and reorder favorites in a new Featured section.

On iPhone, a new System Health page shows the status of each speaker and its Wi-Fi network and flags problems. Sonos says app features roll out over several days or weeks, so you may not see them straight away.

Why it matters for Sonos

Sonos is moving carefully. Its 2024 app redesign removed features and caused widespread complaints, and CEO Tom Conrad has promised to win back trust. Testing 27voice with a small group first, and keeping the old assistant as a fallback, is part of that approach. It is one of three AI options in Sonos 27, next to Sonos 27mcp, which lets chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude control your speakers, and custom AI agents planned for 2027.
