Apple has finally made a touchscreen Mac. The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, announced on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, swaps the mini-LED screen for a tandem OLED panel that you can touch, replaces the notch with a Dynamic Island, and comes in a thinner, lighter 14-inch or 16-inch body with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips.
It starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch. Pre-orders are open now in 30 countries and regions, including the US, and it arrives on Friday, November 6. In India it starts at Rs 3,49,900 and goes on sale on November 9. Here is what it costs, what is new, and how it differs from the M6 MacBook Pro Apple announced just a day earlier.
MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display: price and release date
These are Apple's US starting prices (education prices in brackets), from Apple's press release and online store:
14-inch with M5 Pro: from $2,899 ($2,749). That buys a 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage. An 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU model with 48GB of memory and 1TB is $3,099.
16-inch with M5 Pro: from $3,399 ($3,199), with an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 24GB of memory and 1TB.
14-inch with M5 Max: from $4,499 ($4,199) for the 32-core GPU model with 36GB and 2TB, or $5,099 for the 40-core GPU model with 48GB and 2TB.
16-inch with M5 Max: from $4,799 ($4,499) for the 32-core GPU model with 36GB and 2TB, or $5,399 for the 40-core GPU model with 48GB and 2TB.
Both sizes come in Space Black and Silver, and you can pay extra for a nano-texture display. Pre-orders opened October 28 on apple.com and in the Apple Store app, and Apple says the laptop reaches customers, Apple Stores and Authorized Resellers from Friday, November 6. Apple Upgrade monthly plans start at $55.99 a month in the US.
The older mini-LED MacBook Pro models stay on sale at the same prices, so the OLED version costs $400 more like for like: the 14-inch M5 Pro is $2,499 with mini-LED and $2,899 with PROLED, and the 16-inch M5 Pro is $2,999 versus $3,399.

PROLED XDR: the OLED display explained
PROLED XDR is Apple's name for a tandem OLED panel, which stacks two layers of OLED to get more brightness and a longer life than a single layer. Apple calls it the world's best laptop display, and the numbers are a big step up from the mini-LED screen it replaces.
It reaches 2,000 nits peak brightness for both HDR and SDR content and holds 1,000 nits across the full screen. Contrast is 10,000,000:1, ten times the 1,000,000:1 of the mini-LED MacBook Pro, and it can dim to 1 nit. ProMotion adjusts the refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz.
The color range is wider too. The panel covers both P3 and Adobe RGB and more than 80% of Rec. 2020, which matters if you edit photos for print or grade video. Pro tools include a Pro Display Calibrator, DICOM reference modes for medical imaging, and genlock for video work. The 14-inch screen is 14.2 inches at 3024 x 1986 pixels, and the 16-inch is now 16.3 inches at 3472 x 2266, both at 254 pixels per inch. The optional nano-texture finish is now etched into the cover glass.

Touch on a Mac for the first time
This is the first Mac with a touchscreen. Apple built the touch sensor into the display panel itself rather than layering it on top, which it says cuts latency. You can swipe to scroll a web page, pinch to zoom a photo, drag slides between presentations, double-tap a window to fill the screen, or flick it to tile it.
macOS translates touches into clicks, so many existing apps should work with touch right away, according to MacRumors. Apple named Notion, Canva, Zoom, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Shapr3D and djay Pro among the apps adding touch support, with some arriving later this year.
A new hinge keeps the screen steady when you tap it, and the camera uses video stabilization to smooth your feed if you touch the screen during a video call. The keyboard and trackpad still work as before, so touch is an extra rather than a replacement.

Dynamic Island, design and battery life
The notch is gone. In its place is a Dynamic Island, the same idea as on the iPhone, which Apple says is home to Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI. The Verge describes the camera cutout as a hole punch rather than a notch. Thinner borders let Apple fit a bigger screen in the 16-inch model.
The body is thinner and much lighter. The 14-inch model is 1.50cm (0.59 inches) thick and weighs 3 pounds (1.38kg with M5 Pro), half a pound less than the mini-LED version. The 16-inch is 1.60cm (0.63 inches) thick and weighs 4 pounds (1.82kg with M5 Pro), 0.7 pounds less. MacRumors, 9to5Mac and The Verge all report that the glowing Apple logo is back on the lid.
Battery life is rated at up to 22 hours of video streaming for the 14-inch with M5 Pro and up to 24 hours for the 16-inch with M5 Pro. M5 Max models are rated a little lower, at 20 and 22 hours. Fast charging gets you to 50% in 30 minutes.

M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, memory and AI
The chips are the same M5 Pro and M5 Max that Apple put in the mini-LED MacBook Pro in March, so performance is broadly on par between the two designs, as 9to5Mac notes. MacRumors reports a redesigned thermal system that directs warm air away from the display.
The M5 Pro comes with a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, or an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, with 24GB to 64GB of memory. The M5 Max has an 18-core CPU with a 32-core or 40-core GPU and up to 128GB of memory and 614GB/s memory bandwidth. Storage now goes up to 16TB. Apple says each GPU core has a Neural Accelerator and that the M5 Max can run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters on the laptop itself.

Ports, speakers, camera and software
You get three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe charging and a headphone jack. M5 Pro models drive up to three external displays and M5 Max models up to four. Wireless is Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through Apple's N1 chip.
A six-speaker sound system has 50% deeper bass, according to Apple. There is a 12MP Center Stage camera and Touch ID, but no Face ID and no cellular option, as 9to5Mac points out. It ships with macOS 27, and Siri AI is in beta in macOS 27.2. Apple says the laptop is made with 55% recycled content.

How it differs from the M6 MacBook Pro
Apple announced a separate 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip just one day earlier, on October 27. That model keeps the familiar design: a mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR screen with 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness, a notch, no touch and a starting price of $1,999 (Rs 2,39,900). We covered it, along with the M6 iMac, in a separate article.
The PROLED model is the high-end option. It costs at least $900 more than the M6 model, and for that you get the OLED touchscreen, Dynamic Island, a brighter screen with far higher contrast, Adobe RGB color, a 16-inch size and the M5 Pro or M5 Max chips with more GPU cores and memory. Apple's M5 Pro and M5 Max mini-LED models also stay on sale, so the lineup now has three tiers.
Should you buy it or wait?
If you edit photos or video, work in HDR, or have wanted a touchscreen Mac for years, this is the MacBook Pro to look at. The display is the clear upgrade, and the lighter body makes the 16-inch model much easier to carry.
If you mostly code, write or browse, the chips are the same as in the mini-LED MacBook Pro that costs $400 (Rs 50,000) less, and the M6 MacBook Pro is cheaper still. Touch support in third-party apps is also still arriving, and OLED is new to the Mac, so waiting for reviews is sensible. We have not tested the new MacBook Pro yet, so treat this as a guide to what Apple announced, not a review.
