World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard's new take on the original 2004 Azeroth, has had the biggest launch in the game's 22-year history. In a post on the official @Warcraft X account dated November 7, Blizzard said Forever set records for peak concurrent players and for returning players. Executive producer Holly Longdale added that it brought in the most new players for a WoW launch in 15 years.
Blizzard didn't share actual player numbers, the old record it beat, or how either was measured. Here's what we do know: when it launched, what it costs, the server hardware behind the launch, what's new compared with Classic and the modern game, and when the first raids open.
WoW Forever release date and launch records
Forever went live worldwide on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST (6:00 p.m. EST, 11:00 p.m. GMT, and 4:30 a.m. IST on November 5). It sits next to the modern game (currently the Midnight expansion) and WoW Classic as a permanent third version of World of Warcraft, not a limited-time event.
Blizzard's record claims cover three things: the biggest WoW launch by peak concurrent players, the most returning players ever, and (per Longdale) the most new players in 15 years. Windows Central reads the first claim as beating even the Wrath of the Lich King era, when WoW was at its peak. Blizzard hasn't published a number, so that comparison is its interpretation, not an official figure.
The one outside number to compare is Twitch viewers. Streams Charts data cited by Icy Veins puts the Forever launch peak at about 1.12 million concurrent viewers, close to WoW Classic's 1,132,957 in August 2019. That's interest on Twitch, not players in the game.

The servers: 70,480 CPU cores and 251 TB of memory
Players and press have called Forever one of Blizzard's smoothest launches. On November 5, the official Warcraft account shared what it was running on: 3,924 virtual machines, 251,136 GB of memory (about 251 TB) and 70,480 CPU cores. Blizzard didn't say what hardware or cloud provider sits underneath.
Tom's Hardware compared that with what Blizzard said WoW ran on in 2009: about 75,000 CPU cores and 112.5 TB of memory across 10 data centers. So Forever runs on roughly 6% fewer cores but more than twice the memory, and each of today's cores is far faster than a 2009 one.
How much does WoW Forever cost?
Forever has no box price. Access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, the same subscription that covers the modern game and Classic. In the US a subscription costs $14.99 a month, with discounts on longer plans.
The new Skyborne race costs extra. You need one of three optional packs on the Battle.net Shop. The Skyborne Heroic Pack ($29.99) unlocks the Skyborne and their Zephras Isle starting zone, plus a mount, cosmetics and one Invite-A-Friend code. The Skyborne Epic Pack ($59.99) adds 30 days of Game Time, more cosmetics, pets and two more codes. The Warcraft Forever Collection ($79.99) adds Warcraft III: Reforged and the new Forsaken Kingdom campaign, and is on sale until January 11, 2027.
Locking a playable race behind a $29.99 pack drew heavy criticism from players when Blizzard announced it in September. If you don't care about the Skyborne, the subscription is all you need.
Invite-A-Friend codes from those packs let a friend without a subscription play Forever free from November 4 through November 11, 2026 (PST). That window closes this Wednesday.
What's new in WoW Forever
Forever is set after the events of Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before the Molten Core raid. You level to 60 across the original continents, Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, but Blizzard says there are more than 1,000 new quests along the way.
New and reimagined zones include Mount Hyjal, Shen'dralas (a hidden region between Mulgore and Desolace), the Riverglades (over 150 new quests covering much of the mid-30s to mid-40s) and Zephras Isle, the level 1 to 12 starting area for the Skyborne. Buffwire, citing Blizzard's dungeon overview, counts nine new dungeons between levels 13 and 60.

The Skyborne (shen'dorei) are the new playable race. Pick the Horde and they're Windshapers who can be Shamans; pick the Alliance and they're High-Order Skyborne who can be Mages. Forever also opens race and class pairings the original game didn't allow, including Orc Mages, Troll Warlocks, Undead Paladins, Human Hunters, Gnome Priests and Dwarf Shamans.

Other changes: there are no realms. You choose a ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay PvP), each of which works as one large community, and characters get a two-part name that's unique across your region. A Hardcore ruleset, where death is permanent, is promised for some time after launch, with no date yet.
A new Camping system turns the Cooking campfire into a shared campsite where nearby players add buffs. The account-wide Legacy System rewards exploring and levelling different classes and professions rather than raw power, though Blizzard says you can unlock every perk on one character. Gamepad support has also been refined for targeting, casting, looting and menus.
The first time you log in, you pick a preset. Classic keeps the original look with fewer modern features. Enhanced turns on high-definition character models, quest markers, a single big bag and transmog. You can change any setting later, and swap between HD and original models per character.

WoW Forever raids: December 9
Endgame raids aren't live yet. Blizzard says three open on December 9 for level 60 players. The Barrow Deeps is a new 10-player raid with eight bosses, set in the prison that held Illidan Stormrage. Hyjal Summit is a 20-player raid with 13 bosses near the World Tree Nordrassil. Onyxia's Lair in Dustwallow Marsh returns as a 40-player raid.
That five-week gap gives most players time to level before the race to clear content begins.

Is WoW Forever worth it?
If you already pay for WoW, Forever costs nothing extra unless you want the Skyborne, so there's little reason not to try it. Lapsed players who miss the slower, more social original game are the target. Blizzard's own return figures and the smooth launch suggest that pitch is working.
Some caveats. Forever is PC only through Battle.net, with no console version yet. Endgame raids don't open until December 9, Hardcore has no date, and Blizzard is keeping its real player numbers private. Microsoft, which owns Blizzard, may share more when it next reports earnings.
