OpenAI has started putting GPT-6 into the everyday Chat tab of ChatGPT, and it is not only a smarter model. The update brings a feature OpenAI calls Intelligent UI: instead of a wall of text, answers can now include diagrams, charts, photos, tappable buttons, forms and small working tools such as a calculator or a bill splitter. Paying subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise started getting it on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. Free and Go users are next, from Thursday, October 8. Here is who gets which version, what changes in the model menu, what it costs, and how to turn the visuals down if you do not want them. (OpenAI's announcement, help pages and plan prices checked October 7, 2026 at 21:27 UTC / 02:57 IST October 8.)

GPT-6 in ChatGPT: what launched on October 7

OpenAI released its first GPT-6 models for paying customers in September, but mostly in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API. The October 7 post, titled "GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone", is about the main chat window that most of ChatGPT's users actually open. OpenAI says the new model is "built for more than 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT each week."

There are two GPT-6 models behind it, and which one you get depends on your plan. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol, the mid-sized model. Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna, the smaller and more efficient model. OpenAI says both are "tuned for everyday conversation." The models in ChatGPT Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.

Alongside the visual answers, OpenAI lists three other changes. ChatGPT can now start answering while it is still thinking, then add detail as it goes. GPT-6 is better at deciding when to search the web and finding sources that back up its answer. And OpenAI says it is harder to trick into ignoring its safety rules, especially with attacks spread over several messages, with more detail in a new system card.

When do free users get GPT-6?

According to OpenAI, GPT-6 with Intelligent UI "starts rolling out globally to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers today in the Chat tab. Starting tomorrow, the rollout expands to Free and Go tiers." The post is dated October 7, so free accounts start getting it on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The Verge and TechCrunch both report the same Thursday timing for Free and Go.

It is a gradual rollout, not a switch that flips for everyone at once. OpenAI's help page says that if you do not see GPT-6 in the model menu, "it may not be available for your account yet." When we checked, that help page still described GPT-5.6 Luna as the default for Free and Go, which is what those accounts keep using until GPT-6 Luna reaches them. Enterprise workspaces also depend on admin settings, and some will keep the old model picker for a while.

What is Intelligent UI in ChatGPT?

Intelligent UI means ChatGPT can design the layout of its answer, not just write it. OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to mix text, visuals and interactive elements, and to choose the format based on the question: a comparison might come side by side, an explanation might be an interactive diagram, and a simple question can still get a plain text reply. You do not need a special prompt to trigger it.

OpenAI's examples include a Sunday roast plan with a shopping list that recalculates when you change the number of guests, a road trip with the stops on a map, interactive explainers for the central limit theorem and the Monty Hall problem, and a bicycle diagram where you tap Frame, Wheels or Brakes to highlight each part. The Verge also describes a Mahjong lesson that sorts the tiles into categories you can scroll through. You can ask for a tool outright too: OpenAI shows a retirement savings calculator, a bill splitter and a small retro game built inside the chat.

OpenAI product manager Aarush Selvan told TechCrunch that while "ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface," for everyday things "the most helpful answers aren't just text." He also told WIRED that OpenAI's design team "spent a lot of time figuring out when adding a diagram, chart, or buttons adds value versus when it's starting to feel cluttered," so not every reply will suddenly turn into a chart.

Under the hood, OpenAI built a library of ready-made interface pieces plus a compiler that draws the answer on screen while the model is still writing it, so the layout appears progressively instead of all at the end. OpenAI admits there is "still work ahead to improve the model's design judgment."

Where Intelligent UI works, and where it doesn't

OpenAI's help page lists a few limits worth knowing before you go looking for it. Intelligent UI works on the ChatGPT website and in updated mobile apps, so update the iPhone or Android app first. The older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support it, and OpenAI tells those users to use the web instead.

It also only appears with GPT-6 at the Instant, Medium, High and Extra High thinking levels. It does not appear with the Pro setting, which still runs on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's biggest model. Intelligent UI has no separate usage limit: your normal plan allowances apply.

How to turn off the visuals in ChatGPT

If you prefer plain text, open Settings on ChatGPT's website and turn off Layout and visuals. OpenAI is clear that this reduces visual elements rather than removing them: "Some visual elements may still appear," and the setting does not switch ChatGPT back to a classic, text-only mode. TechCrunch adds that you can also just tell ChatGPT to use fewer visuals.

What changes in the model menu

For paid users, GPT-6 replaces the Latest option in the model menu. If you had Latest selected, you move to GPT-6 at the same thinking level. If you had picked GPT-5.6 Sol on purpose, you stay on GPT-5.6, and OpenAI says no older selectable models are being retired in this rollout. Note that the menu says GPT-6, not Sol.

A Thinking slider sets how hard the model works. With GPT-6 selected, GPT-6 Sol powers Instant, Medium, High and Extra High, and Pro uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra. By plan, according to OpenAI's table: Plus gets Medium and High but not Extra High or Pro; Pro, Business and Enterprise get all of them. Free and Go users get a Think option for harder questions, which uses GPT-5.6 Luna.

Is GPT-6 faster? What OpenAI claims

OpenAI's two speed claims both come from its own internal tests, so treat them as company numbers until independent testing catches up. For questions that need a web search, OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. And on a set of everyday agent-style tasks, it says GPT-6 at Extra High begins answering as quickly as GPT-5.6 at Medium while scoring better overall than GPT-5.6 at Extra High.

GPT-6 price: how much ChatGPT costs now

There is no extra charge for GPT-6 or Intelligent UI. What you get depends on your existing plan. In the US, ChatGPT Free is $0, Go is $8 a month and Plus is $20 a month, according to OpenAI's Go launch post. Pro comes in three tiers listed on OpenAI's help center: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500 a month, with only Pro 500 including the Ultrafast speed tier.

Prices are localized in some countries. When we loaded chatgpt.com/pricing from India on October 7 at 21:26 UTC, it showed ₹0 for Free, ₹399 for Go, ₹1,999 for Plus and Pro from ₹10,699 a month, and the Free plan now read "Unlimited text chats with GPT-6." OpenAI says unlimited everyday text chats on Free and Go are subject to abuse guardrails, while uploads, image creation, voice and deep research have their own limits.

Should you upgrade for GPT-6?

Probably not for this alone. Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna and Intelligent UI at no cost from October 8, so the new look is coming to everyone. Paying for Plus mainly buys the larger GPT-6 Sol model and the Medium and High thinking levels, which matter more for hard questions than for recipes and explainers. If you mostly use the Mac or Windows desktop app, switch to the website to see the new answers, and wait a day or two if GPT-6 has not appeared in your model menu yet.
