Amazon announced a full redesign of its Kindle family on October 1, 2026: a new 6-inch Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Colorsoft. Every model gets a flush-front, edge-to-edge display built on what Amazon calls a reverse-stack architecture — a first for the e-reader category, according to Kevin Keith, Vice President of Devices, writing on Amazon's Devices newsroom. Body colors now wrap from front to back. Prices start at $149.99. The base Kindle is on sale now; Paperwhite and Colorsoft are on preorder and ship October 28 (USD prices checked October 3, 2026).

What changed across the whole lineup

Amazon rebuilt how the display, front light, and touch layers are stacked. The reverse-stack, flush-front design removes the raised border that sat around older Kindles, so the reading surface runs edge to edge. The physical color of each device wraps seamlessly from front to back — visible on a café table or in a tote bag, not only on the rear panel.

New colors include Ube (a rich purple), Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, and Graphite. Fig appears on e-readers for the first time. The Verge notes that the power button moves from the bottom edge to the right edge near the top on the new models. Pixel density for Paperwhite and Colorsoft is unchanged versus the prior generation, per The Verge; Amazon's pitch is contrast, uniformity, and the flush industrial design rather than a PPI bump.

Keith told The Verge the new Kindles have user-replaceable batteries to meet EU regulations. Wireless charging is not offered on the new Signature Editions — a change from some prior Signature models — with Amazon selling a pogo-pin Charging Dock instead.

Kindle (6-inch): prices and specs

The all-new 6-inch Kindle is Amazon's most pocket-sized model yet. Official claims: 16GB storage, up to six weeks of battery life, and 30% faster book opening than the previous release. WIRED reports the plastic model is about 6.8mm thin and about 140g. The housing uses recycled materials and a 100% recycled cobalt battery.

Base Kindle (ads): $149.99 in Ube or Graphite, 16GB. For the first time, Amazon also sells a Kindle with an aluminum back: 32GB, no ads, matte finish using 80% recycled aluminum, at $189.99 in Alpine Sky Aluminum or Seaglass Green Aluminum. Kids Kindle versions of the lineup include artist-designed covers and 12 months of Amazon Kids+, starting at $179.99.

Kindle Paperwhite: thinner, waterproof, longer battery

The redesigned Paperwhite is thinner and lighter than the previous lineup, waterproof, with an adjustable warm light and up to 12 weeks of battery life on a single charge, Amazon says. The display uses an oxide thin-film transistor backplane. Amazon calls it the largest Paperwhite display with the highest contrast ratio in the Paperwhite line. WIRED puts both the new Paperwhite and Colorsoft at about 204g and 6.8mm thick, with 7-inch screens.

Paperwhite 16GB Graphite: $199.99. Paperwhite Signature Edition 32GB in Graphite or Seaglass Green: $249.99. Signature adds aluminum rear housing, an auto-adjusting front light, pogo-pin dock charging, and double-tap to turn pages — while remaining thinner than the previous Signature, Amazon says.

Kindle Colorsoft: redesigned color display

Colorsoft keeps the color e-ink mission — comics, travel guides, and colorful covers without tablet glare — but Amazon redesigned the display stack. It uses reverse printing for edge-to-edge color, a nitride LED light-guide for brighter color without washing out detail, micro-deflectors for uniformity, an ultra-thin optical coating for clarity, and an oxide backplane with custom waveforms for faster performance and higher contrast on both color and black-and-white content.

Colorsoft 16GB Graphite: $289.99. Colorsoft Signature Edition 32GB in Graphite or Fig: $319.99, with the same Signature extras as Paperwhite (aluminum, auto light, double-tap page turn, pogo dock). Kids Colorsoft is available for preorder in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, and Japan.

Accessories: Click remote, page-turn cover, dock

Kindle Click ($34.99): a compact Bluetooth remote for page turning under covers, on a treadmill, or on a tray table. Compatible with all new Kindles and any Kindle from 2024 or later. Page-Turn Cover ($79.99): magnetic cover with physical page-turn buttons via pogo pins, for Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition only. Charging Dock ($59.99): upright stand charging for those same Signature models. Fabric and leather covers start at $39.99; aluminum models also get slim magnetic-attach covers.

Availability and ship dates

Base Kindle, Kindle aluminum, and Kids Kindle became available starting October 1, 2026 in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Australia. Paperwhite and Colorsoft opened for preorder on a rolling basis in those same regions; The Verge corrected its launch-day story to note they ship October 28, not on announcement day. Kids Colorsoft preorder is limited to the US, Canada, UK, Germany, and Japan at announcement.

Which Kindle should you buy?

Choose the 6-inch Kindle if you want the smallest, lightest, and cheapest new model — $149.99 with ads, or $189.99 aluminum with 32GB and no ads. Step up to Paperwhite if you want a larger 7-inch waterproof reader, adjustable warm light, and the longest claimed battery (up to 12 weeks). Pick Colorsoft if color covers, comics, and illustrated books matter more than the extra cost. Signature Editions make sense if you want aluminum, auto brightness, double-tap page turns, and the pogo accessories; skip them if you preferred wireless charging on older Signatures, because that feature is gone.
