Honor Magic 9 Pro Max: ARRI cinema phone launches today

Honor is putting a cinema brand on a phone you can actually buy. Today in Beijing — September 28, 2026 — the company holds its Magic Grand Ceremony to unveil the Magic 9 series: a compact Magic 9, a range-topping Magic 9 Pro Max, and a battery-first Super Edition. The Pro Max is the one the industry has been watching. Its rear module carries dual 200-megapixel cameras co-developed with ARRI, the Munich cinema house whose cameras sit on Hollywood sets, and Honor has already shown the hardware at the Venice Film Festival in Moss Green with ARRI lettering on the island.

This is not the Robot Phone. That China-only experiment put a motorized titanium gimbal on a 200MP sensor and sold the arm as the product. The Magic 9 Pro Max is the mass-market sequel: same ARRI colour science pitch, a mechanical gimbal inside the main module instead of a rising arm, and a design Honor says draws from ARRIFLEX's 1937 three-lens turret. CEO Li Jian has already put a China price on the standard Magic 9. The Pro Max's tag and the full official spec sheet land with today's keynote. Here is what is confirmed, what is still a tipster report, and what the USD maths looks like if you are watching from outside China.

What Honor has already confirmed

Start with the parts that are not rumours. Honor has confirmed the September 28 Beijing launch date and the three-phone lineup. It has confirmed the Pro Max's dual 200MP ARRI camera system: a 200MP main sensor at f/1.57 on a 1/1.28-inch type with a 3-degree mechanical gimbal rated CIPA 8.0, plus a 200MP periscope telephoto on a 1/1.4-inch type at f/2.6 with CIPA 7.5 stabilization. The pipeline supports ARRI LogC3 gamma and 10-bit 4:2:2 APV recording — the same LogC3 profile used on professional ARRI cinema cameras, aimed at creators who currently carry a separate camera for gradeable footage.

Honor is also launching a Photography Master Kit with two clip-on teleconverters: the G500 at 5.88× optical extension and a lighter G200 at 2.35×. Product-line president Fan Fei has shared Honor-shot samples at the native periscope focal length and at extended reaches labelled 500mm and 1000mm with the converters attached. Those are manufacturer samples, not independent tests — treat them as a capability teaser until reviewers get units.

On pricing, CEO Li Jian publicly locked one SKU ahead of the keynote: the standard Magic 9 with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage lists at CNY 6,499 — about $968 at recent mid-market rates. A tenth-anniversary promotional price drops that to CNY 5,999 (~$893), and China's national subsidy can take eligible buyers to CNY 5,499 (~$819). Pro Max and Super Edition pricing have not been confirmed by Honor as of this writing; secondary reports float a Pro Max start near CNY 6,999 (~$875–$1,040 depending on the conversion used), but that is not an official figure yet.

The rumoured Pro Max sheet — labelled carefully

Until Honor reads the slides, treat the rest as well-sourced tipster material, chiefly from Digital Chat Station and Chinese-store colour listings, cross-checked by GSMArena and Gizmochina. The Pro Max is tipped for a 6.8-inch 2868×1320 LTPO panel at 120Hz with ~0.98mm bezels; an 8,800mAh silicon-carbon battery with 100W wired and 80W wireless charging; ultrasonic in-display fingerprint plus 3D face unlock; IP68 / IP69 / IP69K; dual 1216 speakers; a 55MP square-format selfie camera; a 50MP ultrawide; and MagicOS 11. Colours already listed: Moss Green, Silver, and Shadow Black, across 12/256, 12/512, 16/512, and 16/1TB tiers.

The chip is the other open question. Pre-launch reports have bounced between "Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6," "Gen 6 Pro," and Qualcomm's actual Summit name, Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 — the 2nm, 5GHz flagship Qualcomm announced on September 22 with Adreno Neural Fusion and 8K60 video on the Extreme tier. GSMArena's OEM roundup puts Honor's Magic9 Pro Max among the first Extreme Gen 6 phones, launching the same day as today's Beijing event. The standard Magic 9, by contrast, is widely expected to ship on last year's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with a smaller 6.37-inch LTPS display, an 8,000mAh battery, and 80W/50W charging. That split — new silicon only on the Pro Max — is the quiet story inside the lineup.

Magic 9 and the Super Edition around it

The standard Magic 9 is the volume play: compact 6.37-inch body, confirmed colour names (Popcorn/Yellow Rice, Olive Green, Morning White, Curtain Black), the same 55MP square selfie sensor as the Pro Max, and a dual-200MP rear stack that is slightly smaller on sensor size than the Pro Max's. It keeps the dedicated AI key and a separate shutter button. Against China's current mid-flagship shelf — vivo X500 at CNY 5,999 for 12/512, Oppo Find X10 at CNY 6,499 — Li Jian's anniversary pricing puts Honor in the fight on the SKU that actually sells.

The Super Edition is the odd one out. Leaks describe an ~11,000mAh cell, a 6.8-inch 165Hz panel, active cooling, and a glass-fiber body — gaming-phone numbers — while keeping a more modest camera stack (reports point to a 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 50MP telephoto rather than the dual-200MP ARRI set). Honor has not confirmed Super Edition pricing or whether it leaves China. Treat every Super Edition bullet as provisional until the keynote.

Why the ARRI badge matters more than the megapixels

Phone makers have spent a decade pasting cinema logos on colour presets. Honor's claim is narrower and more testable: LogC3 and APV 4:2:2 10-bit as a native recording path, plus mechanical gimbal stabilization on the main module rated at CIPA 8.0 — a figure Gagadget notes sits in the same neighbourhood as high-end mirrorless bodies. Whether that survives contact with real grading suites is the review question. The strategic point is clearer. After the Robot Phone proved Honor would put motors and ARRI workflows into a China-only halo device, the Magic 9 Pro Max is the attempt to put a slice of that stack into a phone that looks like a flagship you might actually see outside a trade-show booth.

There is still no US, UK, or India date. Honor's recent flagships have typically needed four to eight weeks after China before a global SKU appears, and Stuff reports the company has promised UK news later without a calendar. For buyers outside China, today's event is a signal about where Android camera phones are heading in 2027 — Log workflows, clip-on glass, dual flagship sensors — not a checkout button. Inside China, the Magic 9's confirmed CNY 5,999–6,499 band already tells you Honor wants volume on the compact model while the Pro Max carries the cinema story.

What to watch in the keynote

Three slides will decide whether this launch is a camera story or just another 200MP poster. First: does Honor confirm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 on the Pro Max, and Gen 5 on the standard Magic 9? Second: what is the Pro Max's China starting price, and does any SKU undercut the vivo X500 Pro's CNY 7,999 16/512 tag? Third: does ARRI LogC3 ship as a real recording mode with external monitor / LUT workflows, or as a colour profile buried in a filter menu? Everything else — 8,800mAh, square selfie, teleconverter kit — is already priced into the preview. The keynote either makes the cinema claim falsifiable, or it does not.
