Google just filled the gap between its screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5. On October 12, 2026, it announced the Google Fitbit Edge: a slim fitness tracker with a bright Hybrid OLED display, built-in GPS, advanced health sensors and up to seven days of battery life. It costs $179.99, is available to pre-order now on the Google Store and through retail partners, and reaches shelves on October 27. A Stephen Curry Special Edition is $219.99. Here is what it is, how it compares, and whether it is the right wrist for you. (Prices and dates checked October 12, 2026 at 13:50 UTC / 19:20 IST against Google's announcement and independent coverage.)

Fitbit Edge price, release date and colors

Google lists the Fitbit Edge at $179.99. Pre-orders opened on October 12, 2026, and the tracker goes on sale in stores on October 27. Buyers get three months of Google Health Premium included. The Stephen Curry Special Edition, with rye-tone and game-day orange styling, is $219.99.

Launch finishes are Obsidian (matte black case), Fog (polished silver), Olive (satin pyrite) and Canyon (warm gold / champagne), each paired with an Active Band. Extra bands sold separately include the Active Sport ($39.99), Magnet Band ($59.99), Performance Loop ($49.99, coming soon) and Metal Links ($149.99), according to 9to5Google and Android Authority. The Edge uses a new snap-in band system, so older Fitbit or Pixel Watch straps will not fit.

Design: slim aluminum, bigger screen, real side button

The Edge is a pill-shaped tracker in a recycled aluminum case, 11.5mm thin. Google says the case is 45% lighter than Apple Watch Series 12 and that the Hybrid OLED display has 46% more viewing area than previous Fitbit trackers (compared with the Charge 6 in coverage from 9to5Google and The Verge). Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protects the screen. A physical side button gives tactile control for workouts — a step up from the capacitive controls on the Charge 6.

Water and dust ratings are IP68 and 5 ATM (swim-ready up to 50 meters under ISO 22810:2010, per Google's footnotes). It is also Google's first repairable fitness tracker, with a modular interior and a replaceable battery — something Pixel Watch 5 already offered.

Battery, charging and what is missing

Google rates battery life at up to seven days with the always-on display off. With always-on enabled, coverage from The Verge and 9to5Google puts it around two days. A five-minute charge is said to add about a day when the battery is low; a full charge takes about 90 minutes. It uses the same magnetic USB-C charger as the Fitbit Air.

Notable omissions versus a full smartwatch or even the old Charge 6: there is no NFC for contactless payments (Google Wallet), and no microphone or speaker, so you cannot take calls from the wrist. GPS is built in and Google claims up to 40% better tracking accuracy than previous generations, plus an altimeter for elevation — but Android Authority notes it is not the same dual-frequency GPS found on Pixel Watch 5.

Health sensors, workouts and Google Health Coach

Sensors include continuous optical heart rate, on-wrist ECG, SpO2 (red and infrared), a far-field skin temperature sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient light sensor and altimeter. Google's Health Guardian features can surface blood-pressure trends, insulin-resistance trends and high/low heart rate alerts for wellness information only — not medical diagnosis — and availability varies by country. Sleep stages, HRV and a morning recovery score round out overnight tracking.

The exercise app covers more than 50 workout modes with real-time guidance. Automatic activity recognition can categorize up to 100 workouts even if you forget to hit start. Heart rate broadcasting works with compatible gym equipment. Software is a Fitbit OS experience inspired by Pixel Watch 5 tiles and complications — not Wear OS — with Google Maps navigation, media controls and notifications. Quick replies work on Android; iOS is limited by platform rules. Compatible phones: Android 11 or higher, or Apple iOS 16.4 or higher.

Fitbit Edge vs Fitbit Air vs Pixel Watch 5

Think of three tiers. Fitbit Air is the screenless, quiet band for people who want health data without a display. Fitbit Edge adds a large glanceable screen, GPS, richer coaching and notifications at $179.99 — roughly half the price of Pixel Watch 5, which starts at $399 (41mm) / $429 (45mm) from Made by Google 2026. The Watch still wins if you want Wear OS apps, dual-frequency GPS, NFC payments and on-wrist calls. The Edge wins if you want a week of battery, a lighter tracker form and Android plus iPhone support through the Google Health app.

Google also says you can run Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge and Pixel Watch 5 on the same account with seamless switching — useful if you swap devices for training days versus dress days.

Should you pre-order the Fitbit Edge?

Pre-order if you have been waiting for a modern Charge-style tracker with a real screen, GPS and Google Health features, and you do not need tap-to-pay or wrist calls. At $179.99 with three months of Google Health Premium, it undercuts most smartwatches while keeping Fitbit's coaching strengths. Skip it — or wait for reviews after October 27 — if contactless payments, dual-frequency GPS or full Wear OS apps matter more; Pixel Watch 5 still covers those. We will update this story once independent battery and GPS tests land.
